The department began functioning since 1965 the year in which the college was founded as a junior college. When the college was upgraded as a degree college Sanskrit was taught as second language BA Malayalam course started in 1972, MA Malayalam course started in 1998 and Sanskrit BA taught as subsidiary subject.

The second language papers are thee in number and are taught BA part II of the degree courses, and subsidiary papers are two in degree (Mal) and two in MA (Mal).
