| History
of the Department |
The
department started functioning during
the year 1977, with Prof. P.K Krishnan
Nampoothiry as the HOD and Shri:
A.V Madhoo, Shri: P.Padmanabh, Shri:
C.Chandran Pillai and Shri: K.P
Sathya Prakash as the members of
the faculty.
The Department offers Botany Main
Degree course (Model-1) with Phytochemistry
and Pharmacognosy as the elective
paper. We admit 48 students every
year among which 90-95% passes out.
In 1993 we secured the 1st rank
of M.G University. |

| Facilities |
The
department provides a library with 650 books
including floras, books on biotechnology, bio
informatics, ethno botany and pharmacognosy.
The students get trained in handling instruments
such as Autoclave, Hot Air Oven, Digital pH
meter, Centrifuge, Inoculation hood, colorimeter
etc.

We also keep
a herbarium of local flora, along with their
descriptions and diagrams. A Botanical Garden
and Herbal Garden are also maintained by the
Dept. |
| Activities |
During
the year 2006-2007 the main programme was “Know
our Environment” As the first phase an
exhibition of mrdicinal plants was organized
for the public and students.108 medicinal plants
were exhibited including rare and endangered
species such as Sarcostema , Rauvolfia
serpentina, Alstonia veninata etc. |
As
the second phase, a discussion of ecologically
toxic materials was conducted, to make the students
aware of the hazards of various chemicals, drugs,
cosmetics etc. Dr.P.V Radhakrishnan, Dept. of
Chemistry, Deva Matha College Kuravilangad was
the modorator |
| Alumni |
The
Dept. has meritorious alumni, holding important
positions in state government and in the field
of research. Shri N.R Anish Kumar is the vise
president of the departmental Alumni at present. |
| Achievements |
During the
year 2006-2007 UGC has sanctioned a minor research
project on the "Flora of Perumpalam". |
